This is how to get up and running quickly with shado and the workbench Max patcher.
  • You will need to install the free Max5 Runtime (unless you have a full Max5 license). Download from here:
  • You will need Java, version 1.5 or higher. This is included on the Mac (later versions of OS X 10.4, and all versions of 10.5). For Windows, you can download Java from here:
  • Download and install the Jython system for Max - there is a download link here:
  • As per its instructions, copy all the JAR files from the jar folder, and copy the Lib folder, into the folder Cycling '74/java/lib in the Max5 application folder.
  • In the net.loadbang.shado ZIP file you will find a number of additional JAR files. Copy these into Cycling '74/java/lib. (The net.loadbang.lib file also comes with the Jython package, so you will already have this.)
At this stage, you should have a java/lib folder looking something like this. (I've highlighted the new files in orange. Under Windows, the directory layout will be very similar.)

  • Copy the shado-examples folder from the shado release into the Max5 application folder.
  • Launch MonomeSerial, set the I/O protocol to OpenSound Control, the host port to 8000, the listen port to 8080, and the address pattern prefix to /shado.
  • Open the patcher file shado-examples/max5/workbench.maxpat. On first launch it will take a while as the Jython system analyses all available JAR files, and you may see lines like like *sys-package-mgr*: processing new jar, '...' in the Max console window. This is normal.
(If you don't see the console window, select "Max Window" from the Window menu. It will be very useful later on.)

You should now be able to get started with the Tutorials.
